Dr. Seuss Preschool Fun (free printables)

We love Dr. Seuss and always look forward to celebrating his birthday with a week of fun!  It's such a fun preschool theme and with so many books the themes are endless.  Here are some of the fun activities we did this week and you can download all of our awesome printables for free!

Have you tried directed drawing yet?  This was our first time and it was so much fun!  We found this one here.
My 5 year old did amazing!  She had a lot of fun adding extra details to her drawing.

You can't tell from this picture but this little guy loved it.  He followed the first 2 steps and then enjoyed drawing his own way.

Big sister joined us for this project and my kids are asking to do this again!

The drawing did stop-she drew her own hat :)

Next we worked on the letter X sound.  X is a little tricky to teach because there are not a lot of words that start with x.  So we used words that have the letter "X" in the middle or end.  We played this awesome "feed the washing machine" sock game.  I can not take credit for this awesome idea.  I found it adorable idea on the blog Izzie, Mac, and Me.  To play this game she used a game from Amazon that is no longer available.  So I created my own (included in the download before).
Cut out the washing machine and the opening.  Place in front of a box or something with an opening.

Print and cut out all the socks and sound clip art.  Each sock pair should have one picture that has an x sound and one without.  You can glue the pictures to the back of the socks or I attached them with velcro so I can use this game for other activities.  I did laminate and print everything on cardstock.
To play spread the socks out and have your little find a pair of matching socks.  Look at the pictures on the back and find the one with the letter X.
Our washing machine only likes socks with the letter X sound.  Feed the letter X sock to the washing machine and set the other one aside.  A little laundry basket would be cute.  Continue playing until you've found all of your socks.  My kids loved pushing the green button to start the washing machine.  They played several times.  For younger kids not quite ready for sounds you can  you can have them find the matching socks and feed both of them to the washing machine.  My 3 year old loved playing this way.

Dr. Seuss Counting Mat.  We love counting mats and they are a great way to work on one-to-one correspondence.  For this one we rolled a dice and added the correct number of candles.  To make it a little harder and work on early addition skills we used two dice.  I also included number cards that you can use and fit perfect in the box and a cake without the Dr. Seuss so you can use it for any birthday theme.

Dr. Seuss Roll and Count Game.  There are 2 Version of this game that use one or 2 dice.  Roll the correct number of dice.  Find the correct number on your mat and cover with a pop pom or other manipulative.  We used our gator tongs to add some extra fine motor practice.

We tried a Cat in the hat science experiment from  Toddler Approved.  It was a lot of fun trying to mix vinager and oil.  We didn't have any red food coloring but this bright blue was a fun substitute.

We finished off the day with a read-a-thon and movie night. You can find the popcorn boxes here.

Dr. Seuss Rhyming Game

Dr. Seuss is the perfect time to work on rhymes.  This fun musical chair style game will get your kids up moving and rhyming.  Print the fun characters and tape them up around the room.

Print and cut out the circles.  I printed mine on different colors of paper for my little guy to work on colors.  Also the bright colors make the game more inviting!  I printed everything on cardstock and laminated so they would last.

Place the circles on the floor in a circle or scattered.  Play music and have the little ones dance around.  Pause the music and have everyone find a circle to stand on.  Take turns picking up the circle and find the matching rhyming character. Tape next to the character.

There are a few that do not rhyme.  These are placed on the fish bowl with the x.

Keep playing until all the circles are gone.

Truffula Trees Number Hunt and color sort

Your kids will love these Dr. Seuss Inspired activities.  Hide the Truffula tree number cards around the house and send your kids on a number hunt.  I included numbers 1-20.  You can use all of them or for younger kids up to 10 works well.

After have them put the number cards in order.

You can use Truffula Seeds (sweetart jelly beans) and place the correct number on jelly beans to match the number on the card.  To make it even harder have them place the correct number and color on the card.  We went up to 6.
For my little guy we sorted by color only.  I gave him a handful of seeds and he placed them on the correct color.  The jelly beans aren't the exact color but they are close enough to work :)
I also included a recording sheet which is a great way to practice hand writing and number formation.  Place it on a clipboard and let them carry it around while they search for numbers or use it after all the numbers are found.

Green Eggs and Ham Letter Match

This post contains affiliate links. That means if you use my link, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. As always, thank you for your support.

It's Dr. Seuss week here at The Cozy Red Cottage! We have lots of fun Free printables and ideas for you all week long.

The first Free Printable is the cute Green Eggs and Ham letter match.  Your little one will be matching upper and lowercase letters.  Have them tell you the sound it makes after a match is found for some letter sound practice.
Having all of the cards out may be a little overwhelming if you have little ones that are just learning letters.   Letters can be tricky and there are so many to remember.  Maybe only use half of the cards or even 5 or 6 at a time so they can work on a few at a time.

Download below and print on cardstock.  Cut cards apart and you are ready to play!  Don't forget to read Green Eggs and Ham.

Cat in the Hat headbands

Did you know I host a "Pinterest Challenge" every week on my facebook page?  We are just starting out so its pretty small but I would love for you to join us!

This week for my project I used Repeat Crafter me's adorable Cat in the Hat headband pattern.  She has some of the best on her site and they are all free.  Seriously she is my go to when I'm looking for something.

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to show my girls this pattern and they quickly asked for one for Cat in the Hat day.  Oh perfect it won't be to hard and it wasn't. However, not my best idea to start at 9 the night before.  Their happy faces make it worth it.

"Oh the Places You'll Go!" Craft & Printable

Oh, the Place You'll Go! Is my favorite Dr. Seuss book.

Last year we made some hot air balloons inspired by this book.  This was when I wasn't blogging much so I wasn't too worried about pictures...hopefully you get the idea :)
To make them we cut clear contact paper in the share of a balloon.  We cut shapes and squares out of construction paper and stuck them on the stick side.  Once they are done add 2 strings to the bottom then place another piece of clear contact paper to the top to seal.  I cut the second piece after it was on.  cut a small rectangle for your basket and fold in half.  sandwich the yarn and staple the yarn and the sides together.

And with such a great book I had to make a printable as well.  I love the motivational and life lessons in this book.
