I can be Obedient (Lesson 30 Primary 2)

I have just a few lesson helps today...It's my off week from teaching but I couldn't help myself from creating a few fun things.  These are for Lesson 30 I can be obedient.  There are a ton of fun activities in the lesson manual (you can find it here).  I'm really loving the treasure hunt idea.
Maybe you don't teach primary, these can easily be adapted for an FHE lesson. I'm going to use the chicken game for my family!

Update!!!  Now includes story cards.  These cute story cards go with the first story in the lesson about Theodore M. Burton visiting his grandma's farm.

This goes with the wordstrip section.  Have the children repeat the word "obedience."  This would also be cute to display on the board during the lesson.

Noah's Ark Activity (goes with enrichment activity #5 & #3)
Print the ark page and the 2 pages of animals.  (color and black and white option).
Carefully cut along the dark line on the ark (look at sample picture below)
Cut out the animals.
On the back of the animals write the activities from #3 ex. Shake hands with each member of the class.  You'll need to add 2 of your own if you want to use all the animal.
Display the animals and the children take turns picking one.  Have them obey what is written on the back.
Then they can put the animal in the ark by sliding it through the slit you made.

Obedience Necklaces.  Print, cut, and hole punch the top.  Let the kids add some yarn and tie around their necks.  It would also be fun to bring beads or fruit loops and let them string them on their necklace.

Coloring page (Enrichment activity #5)

(Enrichment activity #1) I changed up this activity to fit in with the story at the beginning of the lesson.  Play just like it says except you are going to place the chicken in the barn (see the lesson for much better instructions :) .
Print out the barn and chickens.  Put a piece of tape on the back of the chickens and blindfold the child.  See where it ends up.  Let all of the children try.  Then blind fold one and let them place a chicken in the barn while someone is giving them instructions. (Think pin the tail on the donkey)

Come Follow Me: Matthew 10–12; Mark 2; Luke 7; 11 (March 11–17)

It's time for another Come Follow Me lesson. I'd love to know what you are doing with your family.  I love all of the ways you are making these lessons fit your family and primary class.  This week there are a few different topics that I wanted to include.  You can find this weeks lesson here and the primary lesson here.  I use both of these manuals to plan my lessons.

Jesus Calls the 12: As  I was reading through the primary lesson one of the activities suggested was to place pictures of the current apostles around the room and share a few facts about them.  We did a FHE like this to prepare for General Conference last year except we went fishing.
You can find the activity here.  There are pictures and facts all ready to go.  There is a link to a video of some of the apostles bearing their testimony of the Savior.  It's one of my favorites.
Update: I just found this link from the friend.  There are videos for each apostle.

Sabbath Day: We are going to talk about a few ways we can keep the Sabbath Day holy. We often think of the things we shouldn't do on the Sabbath but with this Sunday Bucket List we are going to focus on all of the things we CAN do!  This talk from President Nelson goes with this topic perfectly.
This post has a ton of ideas on this topic.  Some of them even go with the suggestions from the primary manual. I love the 2 coloring page options in this post.

This lesson contains two of my favorite scripture passages  Matthew 11:28-30 and Luke 7:36–50.  I included  2 printables that I thought went well with these scriptures.

Or if you want to print just the quote you can right click on the images below and save to your computer.  Print from your favorite print shop or your home computer.  It is also included in the download.

Coloring page that goes with Matthew 11:28-30.  There is space to draw a picture or write about a time Jesus has helped you.

Here's a fun activity to show how Jesus can help make our burdens light.  You'll need some cans and a backpack or bag.  You can also print the labels to wrap around your cans.
The labels include different things that can weight us down.  I also included blank ones so you can add your own or just add more cans as you talk about different demands of life.  (homework, job, etc.)  I printed on colored paper and taped them to the cans.  You may need to trim if you are using smaller cans.

Start placing the cans in to the bag one at a time.  Discuss some examples for each one (use the ones that fit your family).  Make sure your bag ends up pretty heavy.

Have someone try picking up the bag or putting it on.  Their reaction should be that its so heavy!  Have someone help them lift the bag.  It becomes much lighter and easier carry.  Let them take the bag off and read Matthew 11:28-30.  You can show them the picture of a yoke (found in the Individual and family manual).  Explain how it works and how the Savior helps us carry our heavy load. In Elder Bednar's talk he uses the example of Alma's people.  Their burden was not taken from them but they were given strength to carry it.  Relate this to carrying the heavy bag-through the atonement some of these heavy cans can be removed and other burdens that are just apart of life our Savior helps us carry.

Luke 7:36–50. This would be a great time to talk about being forgiven of sins.

here's a fun idea we used a few lessons ago.

I think we are going to use the idea from Little LDS Ideas that involves chocolate syrup!  Its a fun object lesson uses a helpers clean hands, chocolate syrup that represents sin, and soap and water for repentance.  You can find the details in her post.  I think my kids will love it.

Come Follow Me: Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20–21 (June 24-30)

Here are a few free Come Follow Me Lesson Helps for June 24-30 covering Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20-21.   The download is available at the bottom of this post.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Print the board game, Sheep, and grass cards. Cut the sheep and the mouth out.  Glue to a box or a bag and cut the mouth shape out.  Cut the grass cards apart.  After you read John 21 discuss what Jesus meant when he said "feed my sheep"  Use a button (or any game piece) for each person.  Roll a dice and move the correct number of spaces.  If you land on a grass piece share a way you can "feed Jesus's sheep".  You can write it on the back of the grass card or just share it.  Feed the card to the sheep.  The first person to the barn wins.  Try to do a few of the ideas you came up with during the week.

In this chapter Jesus calls Simon by name and asks if he loves him and gives the instruction to feed his sheep.  Our Savior asks us the same thing.  For this coloring page have your kids write their name on the line and talk about ways you can feed his sheep.
This is from last General Conference.  I loved this analogy and think its a great way to teach about the atonement.  After gather some supplies and make a parachute!  I think this idea looks fun.

This is a fun object lesson to teach about the Resurrection.  Wrap and empty box and attach the gift tag included in the download.  Tell your kids inside the box there is something that represent one of the greatest gifts we've ever been given.  When they open the box and find it empty talk about the empty tomb and the gift the Savior gave to us.

You can use these puppets to retell the story.  Attach a brad to the rock and connect to the tomb so you can roll it open and closed.  I also included a smaller set that the kids can color and create their own.

These cards can be used in a couple different ways to teach about the experience of those that saw Jesus after he was Resurrected.  I thought it would be fun to play a guessing game for example give clues to help them guess what person/people you are talking about.  Another idea would be to pass out a person to each family member (or group) and have them read about that persons experience.  Then share what they learned with the group.

After learning about Thomas's experience talk about what it means to have faith.  How do we have faith in Jesus even though we can not see him?  You can use this coloring page to draw or write ways we can feel our Saviors love.

Come Follow Me: Ephesians (September 30–October 13) Part one Preparing for General Conference

Edit: Thank you for being patience with me again!  The post has been updated :)

I did not forget about Come Follow Me lesson helps but I was unexpectedly busy today and late as usual getting this posted :)  Ephesians will be studied over the next two weeks and I'm going to be posting the lesson helps/ideas in pieces over the next week.  Tonight I have a couple of ideas to help you teach Ephesians 2:19–22; 4:11–16. "The Church is founded on apostles and prophets, and Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone." (individual and family manual) I love that this goes perfect with preparing for General Conference next weekend.  Tomorrow I will share an additional idea that works for this topic or can be used as more of a countdown-it will be added to this post (edit it has now been added).  Then Tuesday or Wednesday I'll be sharing some fun General Conference activities.  If you have any requests for me to make please let me know and I'll try and accommodate :)  Then Friday or Saturday I'll post lesson helps for the rest of Ephesians for you to use the following week.

For Family Night we are going to talk about the importance of having a living prophet.  I found this article on churchofjesuschrist.org. I plan to share these quotes from President Uchtdorf and then the video clip on that page as well. I also included a journal page.  Older kids can share their testimony of the prophet, maybe thoughts on a favorite talk or any thing they want.  Younger kids may like to draw a picture of President Nelson or of something he has asked us to do.

We are also going to talk about way we can prepare for general conference.  I used this article as a reference. There are actually 11 ideas on the page but I narrowed it down 6 and hopefully picked ways your kids can participate as well.  This can be done as a family or individually.

Before the lesson cut out the cup and hot chocolate pieces.  As a family start with number 1 and build the hot chocolate cup.  There is a page of quotes that go with this that you can also use.  You can finish your lesson with a delicious cup of cocoa OR use the checklist page turn this in to a week long activity.  The idea is to do each of these steps during the week and as the step is completed you will earn something to help them make a yummy treat to enjoy during General Conference.  In this case hot chocolate (I was going to do ice cream sundaes but it is freezing here so I switched it).  Print of the checklist and as the task is done circle the item you get to enjoy.  During conference have your hot cocoa bar set up and let your family members make their treat based on their preparation.  For example if you "dedicated yourself to truly listening" then you will get a cup or a mug or if you you prpared your home and cleared your schedule then you get whip cream.  The last one is a candy cane but you can use any topping-maybe sprinkles! Explain that General Conference will only be as special and meaningful if we prepare ourselves to listen to the messages and act on the prompting we receive.  If we put little effort into it we will receive little just like with our hot chocolate if we only add an ingredient or two our hot chocolate their won't be much to it.

I'm not sure if my explanation made much sense so please don't hesitate to ask any questions!  I will be including some fun printables and activities to go along with this theme in the Conference pack.

To help with studying past talks I included this activity.  This is another one that can be used in one night or spread through out the week.  Print the leaves and the quotes (glue or tape the matching cards back to back).  I plan to pick 1-3 a day and read the quote.  This will be in place of our normal scripture study.  If you would like to use these to learn more about the apostles and prophet you can find some fun fact cards in the fishing post linked below.  You can hide the leaves around the house and have your family collect them, maybe add paper clips and a magnetic fishing pole to gather the leaves, or you can keep it simple and place them in a bowl.  I did include a basket that you can cut, fold, and tape the sides.  This would be a fun way to store and save your leaves.  I also included some planning sheets.  I like to use these with my kids and let them plan an fhe.  I know some of you do mini devotionals so I added that option and I added a page for personal study.  Use what works for you.

That's everything for now :)  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.  Also quickly send in any requests for activities!  See you soon.

We are Responsible for our own Learning (Come Follow Me) December 31-January 6

The first week of the new church curriculum "Come Follow Me" starts on Monday. I'm so excited to share these free lesson helps with you. I've been contemplating how we are going to use it for our family, for my individual study, and also my primary class.  Here's what I came up with for this week.  I'm sure it will be a few weeks of trial and error as we figure out what actually works and doesn't work for us.  For blogging purposes I'll be sharing my ideas for my family (my kids are 10 months-13) and ideas for jr. primary.  If you have young kids I highly recommend looking up the primary lessons even if you do not teach primary!  It is such a great resource. With the short class times it is very likely most of the activities will not be used in class, and even if the same activity is used repetition is great for learning :)

This first week's lesson plan is huge and I think a big reason for that is its more of an introduction to the year and not a specific group of scriptures.  I have several activities included this week.  Pick and choose what works for your family or your primary class.  Also these are just supplements to the manuals so make sure you read through them. I'll try and reference if its from the primary or individual/family book.

On Going Family ideas:

For our family we decided to keep a journal for the year.  I purchased cheap spiral notebooks for each person.  We are going to use it as a place to glue or handouts, coloring pages, printables, answer questions, write questions and the answers we find, write references to favorite scriptures, thoughts and inspiration, etc.  It will be something that is personal for each person.  I've included printable covers for the notebooks-lots of options so print just the ones you want or decorate your own!  (*printing tip-when printing a page with a lot of color use the draft setting.  You will save a lot of ink and you don't loose much quality).  Also a lot of the pages in the download are sized with this notebook in mind.

The second thing we decided to do is a scripture incentive jar.  As a family we will have one jar.  Every time a person participates in family scripture study or individual scripture study they can add one fuzzy to the jar.  We are working towards filling the jar and once its filled will will have a special reward or treat.  An alternative option is to have individual jars that they can fill with fuzzies or at the beginning of the month fill the jar with 30 pieces of candy (or how every many days are in the month).  As they read their scriptures they get to eat 1 piece of candy for that day.  I remember as a primary child visiting a ward that did this for their primary kids and I thought it was so cool.  Being a visitor I didn't get one and was disappointed...still remember that day all those years ago haha. I also included a 5x7 printable of the quote in case you want to display it or add to your journal.
*The printable includes options to tape to the front of your jar and a circle to cut out for the lid.
Now lets get into this weeks lesson ideas for December 31-January 6 We are responsible for our own learning.  Find the lesson here (individuals and families) and here (for primary).  I am using some of the primary ideas for our family.  Also I don't know think I will plan so much every week.  It seems like there are so many topics in this lesson and my kids are out of school so we have a little extra time so I just kept going :)

The first page has questions from the lesson and a reference sheet where to find the section to study (these are a good reference if you aren't sure what section one of the activities below go with)  My plan is to print this page and cut.  During scripture study pick one of the questions and discuss.  Use the manual for scriptures and quotes that coordinate with the question.  (Some have activities and extra printables that you can find below)

What seek ye? print and glue in journal or display.  Questions and answers can be glued on the inside cover of the notebook for easy access.  Use to record any questions you may have and answers you receive as you study the scriptures this year.

The blank scripture card can be used to write a favorite scripture from your study this week (add to your journal).  Another option is to take turns having a family member share a favorite scripture each week.  Write the scripture on the card and display for the week.  Keep all of them in a mini picture book or on a book ring. I am going to include a new card each week.

Next is the parable of the sower. (goes with the 1st activity under ideas for family scripture study and family home evening) I've included puppets for this parable.  Fold in half and read the words as you show each one.  After use the scripture reference on the bottom to find out the meaning.  Mini coloring/journal pages.  Give one to each person and have them answer the question in the space provided (draw or write).  I also included just the words that can be cut and glued in your journal if you prefer to write directly in the notebook.  I love the idea of driving around and looking for different types of soil (idea found in manual).

Poster to print, write on, and display (goes with the 2nd activity under ideas for family scripture study and family home evening)
Treasure hunt and on going scripture activity for home or primary. (Primary manual under I can study the scriptures for myself- combines activities #2&3)  I included some gems and a clue card to create a treasure hunt for your class.  Write 3 of your favorite scriptures from the New Testament on the front of the gems.  Clues go on the back of 2 of the gems and the 1st clue goes on the clue card.  Hide around the class or building (or house if doing at home).  Print the Treasure chest poster and the page of gems (colored or black and white).  Each week challenge your class to  share a favorite scripture from home.  Write the reference on one of the gems and glue to the poster.  Over the year you will collect a special group of treasured scriptures.  It may be a good idea to let the parents know what you are doing if you have a younger class so they can help their child prepare to share a scripture.

Primary book under Jesus wants me to follow him (combination of all activities in this section):  Use the coloring page or goal page to write or draw the answer the question what can you do to follow the Savior this year.  This would be a great New Years Eve activity.

I love the Come Follow me game idea.  I created some action cards that you can let the kicks pick from or they can make up their own.  I also included a fast and slow sign.  Glue on a popcicle stick and switch the speed for more fun.

The Final activity: (primary and family manual)  You might recognize this game from one of the previous primary lessons.  If you still have it you are ready to go.
Prepare: Print one board (lamp) per person, (color, black and white , and 1/2 page option included), Print and cut the cards.  Place the cards in a bag and mix them up.  You will also need to bring something to cover the circles ex. m&ms, cereal, or even buttons.

To play pass out a lamp to each person.  Take turn drawing a card.  If it is a good action "add a drop of oil" to the lamp (cover one of the circles with the candy or item you brought).  If the action is not good then no action is taken and move on the the next turn.  Keep playing until everyone fills their lamps. These cards were made for the topic of preparing for the 2nd coming but they should work for building a testimony as well...if you don't think one fits pull it out.  There are also blank cards so you can add your own.

For the older classes I included a couple of zap cards.  If you draw this one then you have to clear your board!  There are also a few blank ones in case you want to add some of your own.

I think that covers it!  Pick and choose what works for you and if you have any questions please let me know! For primary I plan to use the treasure hunt, coloring page, and show the light the world movie clip.  If time we will play the oil lamp or come follow me game.  Hope that helps.  Let me know if there is something you would like to see included in these posts or ideas you plan to use with your family, class, or individual study.
