27 Fun and Quirky Holidays to Celebrate with your Kids in August

Summer is almost over and school is just around the corner.  It feels a little weird this year not really going back to school but we are excited for our new adventure in homeschooling and online learning. One thing my kids have really loved during this months of being home is our holiday calendar.  They really love checking the calendar to find out what holiday falls on that day. We don't celebrate all of the holidays and the ones we do are very simple.  Its a fun and easy way to makes some sweet memories with my kids and encourage some creativity.  For the month of August I found 27 fun and unique holidays to celebrate. I know I am a few days late getting this posted but hopefully you will still find some fun holidays to celebrate this month.  My kids love these calendars even if it is just to see what holiday lands on a certain day.  We do not celebrate all of these holidays and when we do we keep it simple. I'd love to hear what holidays you plan to celebrate and some of your ideas for celebrations :)

20 Fun Holidays to Celebrate with your kids in June

Its just about summer break for us and I can't wait. I love the slower pace, free time, and of course my kids being home.  My hope is this holiday calendar will spark some really fun ideas for a summer full of memories. I've found if I can start them off with one activity they will often find fun ways to play all day instead of heading towards the tv or complaining about being bored.  It takes a little effort on my part but it is so worth it.

Mardi Gras Masks

I love celebrating different holidays with my kids. Last year we had monthly calendars with fun

holidays to celebrate almost every day. Its a great way to break up the routine and make some

memories. Mardi Gras is one of those holidays that you and your kids might love to celebrate.

Mardi Gras officially starts on March 5 this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate a little early.

These printable masks from Personal Creations are perfect for a DIY costume or pretend play idea!

To throw your own Mardi Gras bash at home, gather some plastic beads to throw to each other, play

some fun music to dance to and wear these masks to complete your look. Your little ones can have

a blast while learning about the official Louisiana holiday. Deck out the house in all things purple,

green, and gold and eat some traditional King’s Cake.

Along with classic Mardi Gras designs to choose from, there are also printable masks for other

occasions including a beautiful flower mask, a powerful superhero, and a dainty butterfly.

Dia de los Muertos Preschool Learning Activities & Coco Family Movie Night

I love using holidays for fun preschool themes.  You can find November's Holiday calendar here-there are 16 fun holidays that your children will love to celebrate!  My older kids were also excited about this theme and they love to join in on themes.  This one can easily be adapted for different age groups.

Dia de los Muertos, also known as The Day of the Dead, is a holiday I didn't know much about and can inspire so much fun and learning.  My kids actually knew more about it due to the movie Coco so they were pretty excited when they saw it on our holiday calendar.  When they are excited about one we try to do at least a little something.  

Before you start I think it's import for kids to understand the meaning behind this holiday.  It's not one that I knew much about and I love learning with my kids about different cultures and places.  (We are working on an around the world theme that we will start posting soon)  Here's a great resource for some kid friendly facts. 

To go with this theme we are going to do a couple math pages from this awesome free resource (if you don't have a teacher pay teacher account I highly recommend it!  There are so many great resources and many are free.)

I also created a fun matching game and coloring page. You can download the here. For the matching game print 2 on cardstock.  It's a great way to work on color recognition.

Finish your day with a movie night and watch Disney's Coco or Elena of Avalor has a cute episode if you can find it.

We've been using these calendars all year and my kids still think they are so fun!  We pick a few and for the most part keep it pretty simple.  You do not need to celebrate all of them (we don't) just pick and choose what works for you and your family.

Ice Cream Party Invite (How to add text with PicMonkey)

I love summer.  I remember hot days playing in the sprinklers with friends and eating lots of ice cream.  I'm so excited that this is something my kids do now.  July 1st is Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day and July 15 is National Ice Cream Day (3rd Sunday in July).  (Find our Holiday Calendar here.  There are tons of fun ones!)  To celebrate why not have an ice cream party.  I mean who doesn't love ice cream?!?

Invite your friends over with one of these super cute invitation. 

Gets some cones or bowls (we have these found here-my favorite! and here), ice cream, and your favorite toppings.  You can even have your friends bring some of their favorites to share.  

Turn on the sprinklers, pull out the kiddie pool, or slip and slide and have a great time cooling off during this super hot month!

  

To use the invitations right click on your favorite one and save to your computer.  

option 1:You can have it printed at your favorite print shop or insert into a word document, size and print.  I like to print on cardstock and size 4 to a page.  They are sized as a 5x7.  

option 2: Use PicMonkey to add text before you print.  

Here's a quick how to. Click on the image to enlarge.

Go to PicMonkey and open your image. 

It will look like this

Click on the text box (in blue on the side) and then add text

Type in your text.  Then highlight to change font and size.

Right click on your text and click duplicate text.  Move into place.

If you click on the 2nd box on the bottom (alignments and grids) the turn alignment on it will help you line up your text.

Change your text to the correct info.  Resize if needed.  Add any additional text (I included please bring your favorite topping to share and place it at the bottom).

Click on export (top) and save to your computer.  You can now print like option 1.

Reversible Farmhouse Signs

I love big, beautiful holiday signs but what I don't love is finding a way to store them. After I made this fun sign (find the tutorial here) this past fall I loved the location of the sign and knew I wanted to make another sign to fill the spot.

Then it clicked why not just paint the back.  So that's just what I did.  I had already stained all of the sides of the frame when I put it together so I covered them with some painters tape and made a new sign

I painted the board black.  Once it was dry I placed my vinyl and painted the entire board white.  After it dried I carefully pulled the vinyl off and lightly sanded to give it a distressed look.

The farmhouse side sits flush with the frame and the harvest side sits back inside the frame.

I now have two amazing signs for the cost of one and I saved time and I don't have to worry about storing either one!

24 Fun Holidays to Celebrate with your Kids in May

I think I say this all the time but the months seriously fly by.  I can't believe its almost May!  For us that means school projects and activities, recitals, and yard work.  With a crazy schedule its easy to get in the mind set of just getting through the day.  That is one of the biggest reasons I love these calendars.  It helps me get out of that mind set and do something fun with my family.  There are so many fun holidays in May I kind of want to celebrate all of them!

Superhero Day & Free Popcorn box Printables

Tomorrow is National Superhero Day.  Its one of those fun holidays I didn't know existed (you can find our fun holiday calendars here.)  Here are some fun ideas that would be perfect to celebrate this awesome holiday.  Don't forget to grab your FREE popcorn box templates at the bottom of this post.

Have a photo shoot and use it to create a sweet Father's Day Gift.

It says "Some people don't believe in superheros, but they haven't met our dad."  You can create this using Picmonkey with the collage option.

Finish up with some superhero movies of course!  Add some awesome popcorn boxes and Hulk Punch (aka green koolaid)

 I've noticed I don't need to go all out for my kids to be excited and have fun.  Honestly they would be happy just watching a movie but I love the look of  excitement and joy when I add a little something extra.  

Free Spring Bicycle Prints

Happy Bicycle day!  We've been loving our calendar full of fun and unusual holidays.  

Today is bicycle day and to celebrate I created some gorgeous spring bicycle prints for you.

To print: Click on the link below to download color you want.  Save to your computer and print from home or your favorite print shop. If printing at home I like to insert the picture in a word document.  Size and print on cardstock.

These are formatted as 8x10's but can easily be resized to fit your needs.
